Mason Mount's final 'payback' pledge comes back to bite him after FA Cup final penalty miss

Mason Mount's words have come back to bite him after he missed a crucial penalty in this season's FA Cup final shootout. Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool went on to win 6-5 as they lifted the trophy for the first time since 2006.

The tie ended 0-0 after 120 minutes as it went down to whoever could keep their nerve from twelve yards. Misses from Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Liverpool's Sadio Mane meant that it went to sudden death. Mount was first-up, but his effort was easily saved by goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Kostas Tsimikas then converted his penalty to send the Reds' supporters into a frenzy as they won their first FA Cup under Klopp's tutelage. The victory means they're still on course to challenge for a record-breaking quadruple. They have the Champions League final vs Real Madrid to play at the end of this month. They can still mathematically catch Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title - although it's firmly in the Cityzens' hands.

Chelsea very nearly got their game plan right, but Mount's penalty miss looks that little bit worse after what he said about potentially winning the final last month. Speaking after the semi-final win over Crystal Palace, as cited by the Daily Mail, he said: "It's definitely time for us to win a final at Wembley. It's five finals I've lost. Now it's time to get our payback (against Liverpool)."

It's the second time the Blues have lost to Liverpool on penalties in a matter of months after they were defeated in the Carabao Cup final 11-10 in February. Thomas Tuchel's side now have just Champions League qualification left to play for before the season comes to its official end.
