Mason Mount, Reece James: Latest Chelsea injury news ahead of Club World Cup final vs Palmeiras

Chelsea are through to the FIFA Club World Cup final after beating Al Hilal 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Romelu Lukaku scored in the first-half of the clash at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium - and it turned out to be the only goal of the game as the Blues now prepare for the weekend's final against Palmeiras.

Thomas Tuchel will want his best players available for the final on Saturday, even though it remains unclear whether the German coach will travel to the United Arab Emirates as he recovers from Covid-19.

So, with that being said, football.london takes a look at the latest injury news and updates ahead of the final against Palmeiras on Saturday.

Mason Mount

Mount suffered a slight knock in Saturday's victory over Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup fourth round, with some concerns over whether the England international would be fit enough for Wednesday's clash with Al Hilal.

However, Mount came on in the second-half of the win, easing supporters' worries and he could be set to start on Saturday.

Expected return date: N/A.

Reece James

James has travelled to the UAE with his Chelsea team-mates, but Zsolt Low confirmed the defender would not take any part in the tournament as he steps up his recovery from injury.

What has been said: "Reece James, no chance he'll play in the cup. He's in a very good way but will miss still some days, some training session. He's here to enjoy the group again."

The defender also commented on his fitness on Thursday afternoon (February 10).

After the west Londoners beat Al Hilal in the semi-final on Wednesday, James was straight back in training as he chases full fitness.

Taking to Instagram, the right-back shared a photograph of him after another difficult workout on his main story, along with the caption: "Another session. One step closer."

Expected return date: N/A

Edouard Mendy

Mendy arrived in the UAE on Wednesday ahead of the semi-final, but Kepa Arrizabalaga was given the nod in between the posts, and played well in doing so.

The Senegal international was named on the bench for the win against Al Hilal and it remains unclear if he will start versus Palmeiras.

What has been said: "Mendy will arrive probably later today or tomorrow and we'll see how tired he is. He has to arrive first, we have to check him and talk to him. We'll see if it's possible he plays, maybe."

Expected return date: N/A.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

The midfielder has been left out of the Chelsea squad for the tournament having picked up a knock ahead of the weekend’s clash with Plymouth.

It appears to have been deemed serious enough to keep him out of the Club World Cup and so he will hope to make his return in the Premier League.

Expected return date: Crystal Palace (A) - February 19

Ben Chilwell

Chilwell’s return is expected to come some considerable time after the rest of his teammates.

After suffering a cruciate ligament injury - and undergoing resultant reconstructive surgery - against Juventus, he is now ruled out until at least the end of the campaign.

Expected return date: 2022/23 season
