Mason Mount outlined how Cristiano Ronaldo influenced his game during Manchester United trip

It is only a matter of time until Mason Mount is officially announced as Manchester United's first signing of the summer.

The 24-year-old was at Carrington on Monday to undergo his medical and on Tuesday he was back to pose for pictures ahead of completing his £55million move from Chelsea later this week.

At first, Mount might not seem like the most logical addition for a side prioritising the addition of a striker and a goalkeeper this summer, but he could end up being the best bit of business they complete throughout the window.

The England international not only checks every box that Erik ten Hag looks for in a midfielder, but he also offers significant experience and versatility to a United team that struggled last season due to a lack of trustworthy squad depth.

Ten Hag is a huge fan of the young midfielder, who he believes is the ideal fit for the type of football he wants to play. Mount is not only technically brilliant, but he has shown great adaptability throughout his career and has all the physical attributes required to lead the press.

He also offers great versatility and could replace either Bruno Fernandes or Christian Eriksen in the side when required, giving United a lot more options to play across the campaign.

Then there are his set-pieces, which offer an added bonus to a player who already has so much to offer.

United's focus is on signing a striker this summer to give themselves some extra firepower in attack next season, but they also need to get goals from other areas of the pitch if they are to rival the very best.

Ten Hag's side scored the fewest number of set-piece goals out of all sides in the Premier League last season, with five. Liverpool led the way with 17 across the campaign, while 13 teams in the top flight scored at least double the amount United managed.

Mount has provided 13 assists from set-piece situations over the past five seasons, with only four players in the Premier League having supplied more during that period of time.

His dead-ball delivery will be a huge asset to the United side, which might not only improve their effectiveness in these situations but boost their goal threat in general.

He is not only a danger from his delivery into the box, but Mount is also a threat when he takes aim at the goal himself from free-kick situations.

Mount was one of only 13 players to score directly from a free-kick in the Premier League last season and has netted a stunning collection of set-piece strikes during his time at Chelsea.

This love for taking free-kicks stems from one of his first visits to Old Trafford as a child, when Cristiano Ronaldo scored his iconic free-kick against Portsmouth.

"I think everyone has seen the video of when I was younger basing my free kick off him," he told Amazon Prime. "I always watched him very closely when he was at United as a young kid. I loved the way he played, his free kicks.

"I'm a massive Pompey fan, so I went to the game when they played at Old Trafford and he scored that free-kick against David James. I was actually at the game, in the corner so I saw it first hand and I think after that I kind of fell in love with the technique and what he'd done and him as a player."

While Mount's set-piece brilliance will not define him, it is an additional string to his bow that will only make him better suited to their needs this summer.
