Mason Mount gives honest Chelsea season verdict as Liverpool step up transfer interest

Mason Mount has been openly reflecting on what has been a difficult season for him from an individual and club standpoint. This campaign has been far from Mount's most profitable, having registered just three goals to his name despite only Kai Havertz having accumulated more playing minutes in the Chelsea squad.

This has led to an apparent openness for the England international to depart this summer, with contract talks between the player and club having stalled. The 24-year-old has found regular starting berths far harder to come by under Graham Potter than was the case under previous managers Thomas Tuchel and Frank Lampard.

This off-pitch speculation, coupled with a relative falling down the pecking order, has led to clubs circling around the midfielder in an attempt to snatch him for a cut-price deal this summer. Liverpool have seemingly placed themselves at the front of the queue as Mount soon enters the final 12 months of his Chelsea contract.

Speaking to clothing retailer Matches Fashion, Mount admitted to this being a "tough" year, and is already looking at how he can improve his performances next season. Although he gave no hints to his whereabouts for next term, he did add that he remains focused in trying to help the Blues claim their third Champions League title during the final stretch of this campaign.

“It’s been tough and I think you learn a lot from a season like this and you can grow a lot," he said. "Maybe I’m not going to achieve the goals I set at the beginning of this year.

"You look at it like: 'Why did that happen? How can I affect that for next year? How can I do better?' We’ve still got some more to go and hopefully another competition to try and win.”

Mount has played 90 minutes just once in 2023, while a fitness concern ruled him out of Chelsea's last four games before the international break, including the Champions League triumph against Borussia Dortmund.

While Liverpool are the main Premier League club interested in signing Mount, with Jurgen Klopp in desperate need of several new midfielders, Manchester United and Manchester City have also been briefly mentioned. Additionally, a new option emerged for Mount last Friday after former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel took the reigns at Bayern Munich.

That being said, Liverpool appear to be comfortably leading the race and football.london understands that the Reds are seriously interested in the England international and are preparing to make a move for the midfielder in the summer should the situation remain unsolved.

Despite being a proud Cobham graduate, who had been one of Chelsea's 'undroppables' for a number of campaigns, the club may feel inclined to cash in on the midfielder to help meet FFP restrictions after concerns over the latest financial report at Stamford Bridge.
