Chelsea fans hope to see Mason Mount as captain one day, yet somehow, if the board does not act now, we may even see him leave in 2024.
Rather unlikely, I know, however, we’ve come across several situations where Chelsea have chosen to play the long game rather than do what is necessary. Antonio Rudiger’s contract situation is probably the best scenario to take a look at.
N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Marcos Alonso all have contracts that will run out at the end of next season. Chelsea will need a plan of action for these three players whilst they simultaneously learn from their mistakes.
Tying Mount down for at least four more years is non-negotiable for Chelsea fans, so it must be for Marina Granovskaia and the board.
To be honest with you, I cannot imagine Mason Mount as anything other than a Chelsea player. It just wouldn’t feel right. The 23-year-old England international bleeds blue and will most likely prefer a long career in West London. He’d probably look to replicate John Terry’s unique legacy.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues are already looking towards opening contract negotiations this early on. They would prefer to avoid any problems.
It's a good move from Granovskaia’s team. The Chelsea faithful may have been forgiving with the Antonio Rudiger saga, however, I do not expect them to be so merciful if this falls through. Throughout the years, the Chelsea fanbase has had their voices heard louder than I could have imagined. The dynamic has changed from how it was 10 years ago when fan favourites could be dismissed at any time - including the managers.
Rudiger is not the only Chelsea employee to have received support from the fans, Thomas Tuchel has created history. Probably the first manager to receive unanimous support from the fan base. There was a major uproar on social media when unofficial rumours of his imminent dismissal were circulating.
I see Mason Mount as an untouchable golden egg. A manager and a fan’s dream player. Someone who works extremely hard for the badge. A true Chelsea blue, risen from Cobham. It’s no wonder the Chelsea board are eager to begin negotiations. A failure to come to an agreement will be met with angry eyes and an unforgiving fan base.
With a market value of £67.m, I am sure there are many managers who will be eyeing the situation closely closer to his contract end date.
Let’s get this negotiation over the line well before the end of the year, shall we?
