Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been set free on bail as he faces charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault.

The 21-year-old footballer was charged by Greater Manchester Police on Saturday and remanded in custody at a first court appearance at Manchester magistrates court on Monday.

After a private hearing at Manchester Minshull Street crown court on Wednesday, Greenwood was granted bail by Judge John Potter and is set to be released from prison.

Greenwood, who has not played for Manchester United since his arrest in January, is accused of a series of offences against the same woman.

He is accused of attempted rape in October 2021, an alleged in December last year, and a charge of coercive and controlling behaviour.

According to the charges, Greenwood is accused of monitoring the woman’s social media accounts, “stopping and altering” her socialising, and making “threats and derogatory comments”.

Greenwood, who lives in the Trafford area of Manchester, has not yet entered any pleas to the charges.

Nike suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with the footballer, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its Fifa 22 game.

Greenwood is set to appear again at the crown court to enter pleas on November 21.
