Mason Greenwood retained by Man Utd despite suspension as club announce seven departures

Mason Greenwood has been included on Manchester United's retained list of players - despite remaining suspended.

The United forward was suspended after he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

But the Crown Prosecution Service withdrew those charges on February 2, after key witnesses decided to withdraw their involvement.

Despite no longer facing charges, Greenwood, 22, remains suspended by United, pending the outcome of an internal investigation into whether he brought the club into disrepute and was in breach of his contract.

David De Gea was not included on the retained list, despite being out of contract on June 30. United say discussions remain open with De Gea over a potential new contract.

Greenwood has been included on the retain list throughout the past 18 months, following his initial arrest in January 2022.

That is because he remains a contracted player. United have insisted the decision to include him on the list does not give any hint as to the outcome of the ongoing internal disciplinary process.

United said in a statement: "In terms of the goalkeeping department, discussions remain open with David De Gea over a potential new contract, while Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions triggered on their deals.

"Extensions were also processed for defenders Rhys Bennett and Ethan Laird, while Under-21s player coach Tom Huddlestone is expected to stay after discussions over a new contract.

"Young forward Mateo Mejia has also been offered a deal."

United also confirmed the departures of seven players in the statement, with defenders Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe among those leaving the club.

In addition to those two, United added: "Ethan Galbraith and Di’Shon Bernard are seeking new opportunities elsewhere after loan spells at Salford City and Portsmouth, respectively. Both made their first-team debuts for United in a 2019 Europa League clash against Astana in Kazakhstan.

"Eric Hanbury, Charlie Wellens and Manni Norkett are leaving the Academy after the end of their current terms. The Academy is proud of all our departing young players and their achievements while at the club. They will all be supported in securing professional contracts at new clubs, provided with a bespoke aftercare programme, and will always have a lifelong association with Manchester United."
