Mason Greenwood held overnight as police continue to quiz Man Utd star after arrest

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood remains in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.

The England international, 20, was arrested on suspicion of the offences on Sunday following allegations made on social media.

A woman claimed she suffered serious injuries at the hands of Greenwood, who is yet to comment on the allegations.

A number of shocking pictures - including one of her lip bleeding badly - and a horrific voice recording were posted on social media.

"To everyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood actually does to me," one of the posts was captioned.

The pictures were uploaded to the woman's Instagram account and deleted, but not before they were shared across various social media platforms.

Greater Manchester Police was made aware of "social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents on physical violence" on Sunday.

"An investigation was launched and following inquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault," added GMP on Monday morning.

"He remains in custody for questioning. Inquiries are ongoing."

Police officers were pictured visiting Greenwood's Cheshire home on Sunday afternoon.

United have confirmed the player will not be available for selection or allowed to train with his team-mates until further notice.

They haven't formally suspended Greenwood, however, meaning he is expected to be paid his £100,000-a-week salary in full. His existing deal expires in 2025.

“We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media," read a club statement. "We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established.

"Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind."

One of Greenwood's sponsors - Nike - added: "We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation."

Greenwood, who joined United at the age of six, has been a key first-team player for the last three seasons - scoring 22 goals in 83 Premier League appearances.

He started United's most recent game against West Ham at Old Trafford on January 22.

"The club has now confirmed that Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice," read a statement from The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST).

"MUST fully support the decision of the club in this regard."

Greenwood made his international debut against Iceland in September 2020 but was sent home two days later after breaking coronavirus guidelines. He and Manchester City star Phil Foden invited two Icelandic models into the team hotel.

The United forward hasn't played for England since, although manager Gareth Southgate has never formally suspended the player.

Greenwood has been previously warned by the Old Trafford club about his behaviour following a number of disciplinary breaches.
