Mason Greenwood axed from Man Utd kit launch in clearest indication yet over future

Manchester United have dropped another clue over Mason Greenwood’s Old Trafford future by completely leaving him out of the club’s new kit release.

The Red Devils released their new home shirt for the 2023/24 season on Tuesday morning with a number of players taking part in its promotion. Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane and even the currently injured Lisandro Martinez were all spotted in promotional pictures as the kit was made available to purchase.

One player who was notably missing from the shoot was academy graduate Greenwood. The striker is still subject to an internal investigation at Old Trafford and remains suspended by the Red Devils.

Charges of alleged attempted rape and assault against a woman were dropped against Greenwood by the CPS back in February. In a statement released at the time, the young forward wrote: "I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support. There will be no further comment at this time."

There have been suggestions that Greenwood could be welcomed back by manager Erik ten Hag. However, United’s kit launch also dropped another major hint. After the release, supporters could buy the kit with players’ names on the back.

Each member of the club’s men’s and women’s team were available to buy, besides Greenwood. It comes amid a few important developments regarding his future.

The striker - who had scored 35 goals in 129 United outings - was recently spotted keeping his fitness up on a training pitch. Meanwhile, boss Ten Hag also offered his view on the situation.

Speaking in an interview with The Times last month, the Dutchman said: “[Greenwood] showed in the past that he is capable of doing that [centre-forward role],” before he reiterated that a decision over Greenwood’s immediate and long-term future does not lie with him.

Meanwhile, the striker’s house in Bowdon, Cheshire also recently went up for let, again suggesting he could be on the way out of his boyhood club. It has been claimed he could be loaned out this summer with clubs in Italy, Spain and Turkey reportedly interested in acquiring his services.

Greenwood has two years left on his current contract at Old Trafford. He has not made an appearance for United since the 1-0 victory over West Ham in the Premier League back in January 2022.

The Red Devils remain keen to sign a big-name forward this summer, with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Harry Kane and Randal Kolo Muani all linked with a move.
