Masked Singer fans defend Edinburgh's Stephen Hendry after 'snobby comments'

Edinburgh Masked Singer fans have been left "kicking themselves" after a Scottish sports icon was unveiled during the ITV show on Saturday night.

Some fans had to jump to the defence of snooker player Stephen Hendry after a fierce sing-off between Rubbish and Jacket Potato led to the local sportsman's reveal.

During the judging panel segment of the show, TV presenter Jonathan Ross came closest to uncovering Hendry's identity by guessing fellow snooker player Ronnie O'Sullivan.

The other judges thought the mystery singer was an Olympic athlete or Paddy McGuinness, but couldn't settle on a single name.

However after Jacket Potato won the sing-off, Rubbish was asked to reveal themselves - and it was the one and only Scottish snooker legend.

Hendry said: "I couldn't believe you didn't get it because to me it seemed so obvious."

The snooker champion added that he had chosen his rubbish bin costume knowing that it would be so large and uncomfortable that he wouldn't need to do much dancing.

Fans flocked to social media to share their surprise and fellow guesses on the unmasking of the Scottish sports star - with some having to defend the sportsman.

One comment read: "Wow! I see that the snobs are out in force and slagging Stephen Hendry off for appearing on The Masked Singer. Lighten up you miserable gits. Nice to see Stephen has a sense of humour and knows how to enjoy himself."

One Twitter user wrote: "That has to be one of the best reveals I’ve ever seen. I would never have expected to see Stephen Hendry on The Masked Singer.

"He was such a good singer & a great entertainer I can’t un-see the green velvet recycling bin as a snooker table now. Best costume ever."

Another said: "Kicking myself nearly said Stephen Hendry."

And a third wrote: "Wow just when you think you have seen it all, Stephen Hendry on the Masked Singer, quite shocked tbh."

And another added: "I guessed it was a snooker player but went with Steve Davis! I knew Stephen Hendry was the youngest ever winner of a major snooker tournament! Kicking myself."

One said: "Got that wrong! Brilliant singing from Stephen Hendry."

And finally, one concluded: "@MaskedSingerUK at the last minute, I shouted 'STEPHEN HENDRY' at a jacket potato on the tele. I'm taking half a point. What you think?"

The Masked Singer returns to ITV on Saturday, January 28 2023 at 7pm. Catch-up episodes are available on the ITV Hub.
