Masked Singer fans convinced Mushroom is Irish actress after noticing strong 'twang'

The Masked Singer fans are desperately trying to work out who Mushroom is on the wacky ITV singing show.

On New Year's Day, Mushroom opened the series with their incredible performance of Its Oh So Quiet and has managed to become a fan favourite.

The character has sparked assumptions amongst fans after they noticed Mushroom has a distinctly feminine voice and a northern English accent.

But when Mushroom belted out the song, judges and fans alike were confused as they noticed an Irish twang in their voice.

Speculation surrounded who is behind the mask, with the judges guessing it is Irish comedian Aisling Bea.

But Saturday's episode confused everyone further, with a whole mixture of names being thrown into the bag - including Irish actress Pauline McLynn.

Mushroom dropped more cryptic clues, saying they needed to "get up earlier and dig deeper if they want to catch me out" and that they've been "lucky to be able to leave my forest and plant myself in lots of exciting places far from home".

Rita Ora guessed presenter and former The Saturdays singer Rochelle Humes, while Davina McCall thought it was Loose Women's Jane McDonald.

Speaking on the show, Davina said: "I feel that that is a proper, northern accent.

She is a famous actress on Father Ted (Channel 4)

"The chattering teeth immediately made me think of Loose Women, you know chatter.

"I thought of Jane McDonald."

Mushroom nodded along with Davina's guess.

The singer was born and raised in Wakefield, which has viewers convinced that she must be Mushroom after the masked singer admitted that they were from the Yorkshire town.

Comedian Mo Gilligan was feeling "Yorkshire vibes" and revealed he thought it was Coronation Street's Kym Marsh, while Jonathan Ross believes it is Joanna Lumley.

But fans think the person behind the mask is Derry Girls' Siobhan McSweeney, who plays Sister Michael.

One fan wrote on Twitter : "Watching last night’s The Masked Singer. Early guess, Mushroom could be Siobhan McSweeney."

But people also think it could be Father Ted star Pauline McLynn, who played Mrs Doyle.

A second commented: "Just catching up on The Masked Singer. Mushroom - Pauline McLynn. If it is, nice belt."

Other fans turned their guesses towards actresses Jodie Whittaker and Sheridan Smith, as well as Melanie Sykes.
