Two masked men looped a heavy chain around a cash machine and tried to use a car to yank it from a convenience store. But the attempted robbery failed and they fled without any cash.
They pulled up outside the Co-op in Dudlow Green Road in Appleton, Warrington. Wearing balaclavas and dressed in black tracksuits and trainers, then fled in the vehicle which was found abandoned nearby.
The incident shortly after 9.30pm on Tuesday 31 May. Detective Constable Ian Morris, of Warrington local policing unit, said: "We believe the men came prepared to rob the cash machine however it failed and they quickly left the area.

"We're carrying out numerous enquiries and as part of of the investigation we're asking anyone who has CCTV or dash cam footage that could assist us to get in touch. I would also appeal to anyone who has information or may have seen what occurred to contact police."

It is the second incident at the Co-op premises this year. In January two members of staff were forced back into the store as they were closing at night, by two men armed with a large knife and a hammer, demanding cash and cigarettes.
