Mask rules in Tasmania explained, as COVID precautions change again

Despite the rule change, there are some situations which still require you to wear a mask. (Pixabay)

Confused as to where you need to wear a mask in Tasmania? The rules are set to change again today but we've got you covered.

You might remember last week the Tasmanian government removed the mask mandate in retail settings for customers only

That includes shopping centres, supermarkets, department stores or other shops, although staff still need to wear their masks.

Large outdoor events, such as Salamanca Market, will no longer require people to wear a mask. (Tourism Tasmania/City of Hobart)

And the latest changes come at 5pm today (Friday, March 11).

Face masks are no longer be mandatory (for staff and customers/patrons) in:

  • Retail businesses (including banks and petrol stations)
  • Accommodation and hospitality (including pubs and clubs, cafes and restaurants)
  • All indoor and outdoor events and activities (unless identified as a requirement by Public Health)
  • Gyms and indoor sport recreation areas
  • Places of worship
  • Personal services such as hairdressers and beauticians
  • All premises and workplaces, including construction, not specified in the 'masks required' list.

Wearing a face mask is still mandatory for people aged 12 years and older (unless exempt) in Tasmania in these high-risk and vulnerable settings:

  • Hospitals (not patients)
  • Residential aged care facilities (not residents) and in-home care
  • Residential disability care facilities (not residents) and in-home care
  • Correctional facilities (not prisoners/detainees)
  • Healthcare facilities and medical services (including GP surgeries, pharmacies, dentists, optometrists and other allied health providers)
  • Primary schools (teachers/staff/visitors only)
  • Secondary schools (including students)
  • Early childhood services, including childcare (staff/visitors only)
  • Public transport (including taxis and ride-share services)
  • Airports and aircraft
  • Spirit of Tasmania and ports
Many customers can stop wearing a mask at venues but staff will still have to wear one. (ABC News: Danielle Bonica)

I can still wear a mask if I want to, right?

Right. Keep wearing them if you want to. They still provide protection.

The rules changes are about mask mandates.

More information on the current suite of COVID-19 precautions can be found on the Tasmanian government's coronavirus website.
