Mary Queen of Scots: Saoirse Ronan looks like royalty on red carpet alongside Nicola Sturgeon and Jack Lowden

Saoirse Ronan oozed royal-ready elegance as she stepped out for the Scottish premiere of Mary Queen of Scots alongside Nicola Sturgeon.

The 24-year-old, who plays Mary in the film, looked breathtaking as she graced the halls of Edinburgh Castle.

Ronan was wearing an effortless pale-pink gown complete with a sweetheart neckline.

She finished off the stunning look with her short hair in a casual bob, subtle pink eye-makeup to match her dress, a bold red lipstick and a simple pair of red earings.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also turned out in support of the film, beaming as she posed alongside Ronan for snaps.

Ronan was in good spirits as she pulled faces at photographers, posing alongside co-stars Jack Lowden and James McArdle.

McArdle couldn’t resist sticking his tongue out during the photo-op whilst Ronan was left visibly in hysterics.

Director Josie Rourke revealed she spent “ages” trying to find a suitable base for the film in a bid to film as much of the movie as possible in Scotland.

According to The Scotsman, she said: “It was amazing filming in Scotland. In order to film all the footage that we wanted we had to agree that we would shoot no matter what the weather was doing.

“We didn’t have what they call weather cover where you can go and film somewhere warm if the weather looks as it’s going to be really bad.”

She added: “But in the end we only last half a day. You’ve not opened any studios yet in Scotland, which would have been amazing.

“We spent ages going: ‘Is there not somewhere we could use?’ There just wasn’t anywhere with a big enough footprint.”

Mary Queen of Scots hits cinemas on January 18.
