Mary Lou Retton Discharged From Hospital After Pneumonia Battle, per Daughter

Olympic champion gymnast Mary Lou Retton has been discharged from a Texas hospital amid her battle against a rare form of pneumonia, her daughter McKenna Kelley posted on Instagram Monday.

Although Retton is not in the hospital anymore, Kelley noted that Retton is not fully recuperated.

“Mom is HOME & in recovery mode,” Kelley wrote on Instagram. “We still have a long road of recovery ahead of us, but baby steps.”

Kelley initially posted on Oct. 10 that her mother had been in the hospital for over a week with pneumonia and was unable to breathe on her own in the ICU. Since then, Retton made progress but also suffered a “scary setback.”

The 55-year-old retired gymnast is best known for becoming the first American female gymnast to win gold in the Olympic all-around in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She won a total of five medals at the Olympics that year and later was named SI’s Sportsperson of the Year.
