Former Celtic flop defender Marvin Compper has been fired as boss of Lokomotiv Moscow boss despite the German recently revealing his family had been attacked online for staying in Russia.
The 37-year-old German international was a major disappointment at Celtic, where he cost £1million when he signed five years ago, but was completely frozen out at Parkhead and featured in just one solitary game for the Hoops – a 3-0 Scottish Cup win against Morton. He was allowed to leave to return to his homeland with Duisburg where he moved into coaching and then made the surprise move to Russia last year as assistant manager to fellow German Markus Gisdol at Lokomotiv.
Compper was appointed interim manager after Gisdol quit the job in protest at Russia's invasion of Ukraine and remained as boss ever since. He revealed he and his family suffered severe criticism for staying in Russia, but had no regrets.
But Lokomotiv have acted to sack Compper after a recent downturn in form. They stated: "Marvin Compper is no longer employed as coach after unsatisfactory results."
Compper previously explained why he opted to stay in Moscow. He stated: "I feel a responsibility to stay here. We came here in October 2021 to change something, we brought a philosophy to the whole club, from top to bottom. I feel a responsibility for this towards the people who have trusted us.
"Many foreigners work at this club, not just Russians. The people we met here are people with a good heart who have nothing to do with politics.
"I'm observing the situation in Russia from day to day. There is a regulated, normal everyday life here and I like my job and feel safe. If that were to change, we would reassess the situation.
"I've experienced a lot of hostility because of my decision. It hurts. My wife and I get a lot of it on social media. She is now being insulted on her work account, there are nasty comments. It's a shame and it hurts.
"I see many people in the club here depressed, thoughtful and introverted because of the situation. For me, I will just try to move on and not let the group here down."
