Marvel movies 2019: Everything you need to know about the upcoming superhero films, in order

Which of your favourite Marvel characters will be making a comeback this year? (Picture: Marvel Studios )

It's safe to say that Marvel has dominated cinema in 2018.

This year has seen some fantastic releases from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which have been huge successes: Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 account for around a third of the USA's 2018 box office revenue.

There's no time to let the success lie: the superheroes and villains have plenty on next year and beyond.

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Captain Marvel – March 2019

Top dog: Brie Larson will play Captain Marvel (Invision)

The first MCU release next year will see the first woman get her own film in the superhero universe.

Brie Larson will play Captain Marvel, also known as Carol Danvers, a fighter pilot turned flying superhero.

Avengers 4 – May 2019

Farewell: this may be Robert Downey Jr.'s last Avengers (Marvel Studios)

The bedrock of the MCU will return in spring next year – although don't expect to see some of your favourite characters survive the end of the film.

The contracts of Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) will all expire with the fourth Avengers movie. Who will meet their grisly ends?

Spiderman: Homecoming 2 – July 2015

Back again: Tom Holland will be reprising his role as a young Spiderman (PA)

Following the dumping of Andrew Garfield's Spiderman (yawn), Tom Holland will return as Spiderman with Zendaya as Mary Jane.

They'll go head to head with villain Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – 2020

Loveable outcasts: the Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel Studios 2017)

The loveable superhero outcasts are set to return for a third film – although what exactly that will involve is looking very precarious.

Disney recently fired director James Gunn over offensive tweets but the cast, which includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper, wants him reinstated.

Black Panther 2 – TBC

Wakanda really is forever - and it will return for a second film soon (Marvel Studios 2018)

As the breakout cinema star of 2018, thank goodness Black Panther is returning for a second film.

No doubt Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, an amazing soundtrack and all-around black excellence will be out in full force again.
