Marty Taupau insists Samoa can take positives from Rugby League World Cup hammering at England's expense

Samoa's Marty Taupau insists they can take positives from their hammering at the expense of England. Samoa, heavily tipped to beat the hosts, were obliterated as they conceded ten tries in a disappointing start to their campaign.

On an afternoon where the result was as much a surprise as Samoa's under-par performance, it puts pressure on Matt Parish's side heading into their coming group games with Greece and France.

However, the seasoned forward appeared relaxed following the loss, insisting it was a stepping stone for the side as they look to grow into the tournament.

"It was obviously disappointing with the scoreline," he said. "But there are things we can definitely take out of it. It's only game one so it's a lesson learned for us and there's a lot of positivity we can take out of that. We're just building.

"We'll go back to the drawing board individually and have a collective review as a group. That will be the stepping stone for us to work and we'll tweak a few things."

Taupau also had kind words for England. "They played well, to their strengths. Good on them, they got the win which is what they wanted but the focus is on us and our athletes and we'll build from there."
