Marty Morrissey weighs in on All-Ireland final fallout as he says 'this isn't over yet'

Marty Morrissey feels the GAA could have handled the fallout from Sunday's All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship final much better.

The RTE commentator and presenter believes the association should have taken control of the matter far earlier than they did.

Glen have lodged an appeal to the result of the decider after it emerged that Kilmacud Crokes, who won the game by 1-11 to 1-9, had an extra player on the field as they defended a 45 right at the end of the match.

The Maghera men had criticised the GAA for placing the onus of appealing the result on them and they had until 3.30pm on Wednesday to object to the result.

Club officials met on Tuesday night and, at 11pm, they submitted their objection to Croke Park.

But Morrissey feels the GAA should not have made Glen make the decision and should have done so themselves.

Speaking on the most recent developments, he told RTE Radio 1's Morning Ireland: "It was decided that they would lodge an appeal with the Central Competitions Control Committee, which they did last night around 11 o'clock.

"So now to use to use that pun 'the ball has been kicked from Derry back down to the CCCC in Croke Park'. They will be meeting within the next 24 hours to decide what happens next.

"There are three options available when an extra player is on the field of play and we all know exactly what happened. There were 16 players, 17 but that's not relevant, that was Paul Mannion coming off the field. It was the fact that there were 16 players (defending the 45).

"What's available for the CCCC are now three options - forfeiture of the game for Kilmacud Crokes, a replay, or a fine for Kilmacud Crokes.

"To be honest with you, this is very difficult for both clubs here. Glen have been in the spotlight to object and that then the CCCC will then make a decision and the process will continue. I feel that Croke Park should have taken control of this far earlier.

"Ultimately, it's the fourth official and the people along the sideline that should have controlled this a lot better. We see it in the World Cup where a player has to wait to come off the field before a substitute comes in. What happens in a moment of passion and emotion is that players come on the field and this is what happened.

"You look at the photographic evidence and you see there are 16 players. The next part of that is whatever the CCCC decide, Kilmacud Crokes then have three days to lodge a counter objection. So this story is not over yet. It's not clear cut and the feeling I'm getting is that there will be a replay, but it will now be interesting what Kilmacud Crokes' reaction will be."
