Martinelli masterclass as Man City handed title blow – Arsenal winners and losers vs Everton

Winners

Gabriel Martinelli

That’s four goals in three games for Gabriel Martinelli now. Having initially seemed to have somewhat dipped in form after the completion of the World Cup the Brazilian is getting back to his best and has now become the top scorer at the club.

This is certainly in part due to Leandro Trossard starting in the Arsenal centre-forward role, and the interchanging of positions. Martinelli popped up in the middle to receive the pass from Bukayo Saka in the first half.

That said, he was in the middle when Eddie Nketiah was there, having replaced Trossard, to score Arsenal’s fourth of the night. Martinelli is reaching that next level which, having signed a brand new bumper contract, is always a great sight to behold.

Bukayo Saka

Like Martinelli, Arsenal’s opposite flank is also seeing a return to the best form. Bukayo Saka has looked the Gunners' most threatening player even without the same regular goalscoring as his left-wing teammate.

Finally, his efforts were rewarded with a contribution on goal with another showcase of how far his right-footed finishing has come. Think back to the Leeds United game and the England international’s finish with his right foot there, this time Saka managed another piledriver of a strike past his Three Lions teammate.

Oleksandr Zinchenko

This might be my favourite performance from Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Ukrainian was quite literally everywhere on the field, any heat maps will have needed some additional gas to light up the majority of the football field to measure just how far the former City man had run.

His passing though was something else. Not only did he find a pass to Saka for the opener on the right, but his passing into the left half-space, showcased well in the fourth goal, was the key to unlocking a typically stubborn Everton defence.

We might have some concerns about the lack of game time that Kieran Tierney is getting, but frankly what Zinchenko is doing leaves him undroppable. He must play every Premier League game. Period.

Losers

Manchester City

Unable to reply with this being the game in hand it means that Arsenal’s main rivals are firmly five points behind in the race for the Premier League title. The Gunners have a favourable run of games until the international break with their challengers having to navigate a tricky Champions League reverse fixture against Leipzig, Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium and a trip to Selhurst Park.

How the table looks come the end of the month could be pivotal in how the league might end this entire season. But there remain thirteen games left to play and there are sure to be plenty of twists and turns along the way.

April’s fixture schedule

Although Arsenal were playing in the league the FA Cup was taking place. It was tempting to include Tottenham Hotspur in tonight’s loser list but another trophyless season for the Gunners’ arch-rivals has become something of an annual thing.

However, Southampton losing to Grimsby certainly does have an impact on Arsenal. The surprise defeat means the Saints will now play Arsenal on the weekend of April 21.

If Sporting CP knock Arsenal out of the Europa League then the Gunners will play Southampton on Friday, April 21. However, should Mikel Arteta and his side progress to the quarter-finals then the game against their south coast opponents will move to Sunday, April 23.

This is significant because the huge potential title-deciding clash at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, April 26 will be just days after this. Had Southampton made the FA Cup semi-finals, Arsenal would have had a weekend off before playing Man City where now they have far less time to recover.

Neal Maupay

If there is one currently active player that has made himself somewhat of a villain to Arsenal supporters it is Neal Maupay. From the clash with Bernd Leno in 2020 which cost the German his place in an FA Cup final and the way events have transpired since, potentially, maybe his Gunners career turned in this moment.

The Frenchman more recently in the 1-0 defeat at Everton needlessly riled up Zinchenko to try and waste time. Well, his very poor display tonight and early second-half substitution has certainly seen him sit nicely in the loser pile as he moped coming off the field having been hooked by Sean Dyche despite there being no senior striker on the bench in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
