Martin Short opens up about his Irish family - and corrects co-star Steve Martin after he confuses Ireland as being part of the UK

Top Hollywood actor Martin Short has opened up about his 97-year-old Irish aunt, who runs a popular bar in Ireland.

Martin lifted the lid on his Irish roots during an interview with Steve Martin and Selena Gomez ahead of the premiere of Only Murders in the Building where he opened up about his family owning Shorts Bar in Crossmaglen, Co Armagh.

Speaking to the Strawberry Alarm Clock on FM104, Martin said: “I’m Irish. Shorts bar in Crossmaglen. It’s been in the family since 1880 and it is run by my aunt Rosaleen who is 97 today.”

Steve said he would’ve loved to shoot the news series abroad but mixed up his geography between Ireland and England – before Martin quickly corrected him.

Steve said: “You know we actually considered doing a season abroad in the UK. Is Ireland part of the UK?”, before he’s told ‘no’, he added: “But still proximity but it didn’t manifest itself because we had to start shooting right away.

“Anyway, I would love that – that we go to an Irish town. Wouldn’t that be great, Marty?”

But Martin shut him down, responding: “It would be great until you mention, hey, aren’t you part of the UK? And you’d be thrown out of the bar.”

In February 2020, Martin previously opened up about his trip back to Ireland.

"Short's Bar is still there. It was started in 1885, and it's running and functioning by my aunt Rosaleen, and I'll be visiting it when I'm up there because we'll be playing Belfast as well."

And he’s even brought fellow Father of The Bride star Steve along with him to meet his family.

"I've been there twice," he recalled at the time. "With Marty, and I went there once . . . I can't remember the occasion, but I think just to see it . . . I would've played my banjo in a bar or two. I don't remember the exact details."

Martin was speaking alongside long time pal, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez ahead of their new show, Only Murders In The Building.

Only Murders in the Building centers around three strangers who love true crime and find themselves wrapped up in one after there is a death in their apartment building.

While the first season was well-received, season 2 promises to be even bigger with several established stars joining the cast.

Comedian Amy Schumer plays a parody of herself and Paper Towns actress Cara Delevingne joins the cast as an artist named Alice.

Shirley MacLaine, Zoe Colletti and Michael Rapaport also joined the cast, but perhaps the biggest addition is Saturday Night Live alum Tina Fey who plays a podcaster set to take down Martin, Gomez and Short's characters.
