Grinning Celtic legend Martin O'Neill has laughed off offering new Rangers boss Michael Beale any advice after he returned to the Glasgow cauldron.
Beale has taken over from axed Gio van Bronckhorst and has quickly got down to work as he looks to kickstart Rangers title challenge, with Ange Postecoglou's side leading the Scottish Premiership by nine points during the winter break. Following his arrival from QPR, Beale will have to get off to a positive start against Hibs when the action resumes on December 15, but Parkhead fan favourite O'Neill won't be handing him any tips for his return to the Ibrox dugout.
The former Celtic boss was put on the spot about Beale's appointment during an episode of the BBC's 'Sacked in the Morning Podcast' by host Amy Irons, as they ran down the big talking points from the last week. Irons quizzed: “Obviously this week we’ve seen Michael Beale appointed as the new Rangers manager, what do you make of the appointment and what words of advice would you have for a manager coming into one of the big Glasgow clubs?”
A smirking O’Neill responded: “Well I won’t be giving him advice anyway. I'm trying to sell books in Bridgeton."
However, the Northern Irishman did confess he could see Beale enjoying success as he looks to recapture the magic he found as Steven Gerrard's trusted lieutenant. O'Neill went on: “He’s been at the club before under Gerrard and knows the players and the club.
"Rangers is - and I’m not just saying this because I want to leave here alive - it’s a fantastic football club. It really is. But it’s been trailing Celtic now and they broke the 10 In A Row but Celtic have got really strong and Rangers are trailing again. Having said that, they were a penalty kick away from winning the Europa League. I was thinking ‘God Almighty, if you’d have won that in Seville, we’d have died’.”
