The son of slain civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has called for unity and a rise above division in the aftermath of the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Martin Luther King III, a civil rights advocate in his own right, emphasized the need for the nation to come together during this challenging period.

King expressed his concerns about the current state of the nation, stating that it is facing another dark period that requires intentional efforts to do better. He urged for a collective decision to move beyond division, fear, and hatred, emphasizing that the country is capable of exhibiting better behavior.

Reflecting on the similarities between the current situation and the tumultuous year of 1968 when his father and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated, King highlighted the persistence of hostility and hatred in society. He noted that the ongoing climate of animosity should not come as a surprise given the prevailing attitudes.
