Martin Lewis urges people to take ‘boiler challenge’ which could cut annual energy bills by over £100

Earlier this week, Martin Lewis issued a stark warning to every energy customer across the country following Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s announcement that the UK Government’s £2,500 energy price guarantee will end next April. The consumer champion took to social media to advise people that energy bills look set to hit an eye-watering £4,350 from April.

Energy, fuel bills and the cost of living crisis dominated the hour-long Martin Lewis Money Show Live as it returned to the small screen on Tuesday night, as the consumer champion tried to share as much information and as many tips as he could in the first episode of the new series.

One energy and money-saving tip he encouraged every household with a combi boiler to take is the ‘boiler challenge’ which, according to MoneySavingExpert.com could save you over £100 in the next year on energy bills. This is similar to the boiler tweak we reported on recently, you can find out more about that here.

Martin explained that most people have a combi boiler and could make real savings just by changing the water flow temperature setting. Essentially, this is the temperature of the water that circulates around the system and heats the radiators around your home.

The challenge simply involves changing the current flow temperature to a lower one, something that you probably won’t even notice the difference with, but it will help to reduce your energy bills.

Martin pointed out to viewers that the MoneySaving Boiler Challenge has nothing to do with MoneySavingExpert.com - of which he is founder - but is run by a charity called Nesta.

The Boiler Challenge website states that 54,506 have now turned their flow temperature down across the UK and says that if 10 million households turned down the flow temperature on their combi boilers to 60C or below this could wipe £1billion off UK energy bills and save 1.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions - the equivalent of nearly six million transatlantic flights.

There’s nothing complicated in doing it and no tinkering with dangerous boiler parts - the handy tool on the website gives step-by-step instructions on what to do.
