Martin Lewis has urged mobile phone users to act quickly and avoid upcoming price hikes by sending two texts.
On the latest episode of his ITV1 money-saving show, the financial guru said that those who are out of contract might be able to get out of the rate rises by switching providers. It comes as broadband and mobile prices are set to increase by up to 17 percent from April.
As reported by Mirror Money, Martin warned that even those who are mid contract could be hit by steeper bills, and said: "So what do you do about it? Five steps."
While showing a graphic of the five steps, Martin explained: "First text INFO on 85075 on your current phone. It's free to do, to find out if you're out of contract and free to leave."
He then said that viewers could pick up cheap SIM-only deals by using price comparison websites - as this tends to offer better deals than direct.
Thirdly, the Money Saving Expert advised that users opt for a low-price network as there are only four mobile networks in the UK; O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. The rest just use one of the big four's signals.
Step four is to get your PAC code by texting "PAC" to 65075. If you have this code, you can request to move your current mobile number to the company you are wanting to switch to.
Finally, according to the Money Saving Expert, a tried-and-tested way to get a cheap deal is to haggle.
He then shared some top haggling tips to use when on the phone with your current provider. Martin advised customers to ask to cancel and to be put through to customer retention.
This team's specific job is to keep you with them, and so they might be able to offer you better deals that you have found online.
If you are unable to get a cheaper deal, tell providers that they will have to disconnect you, but buy a bit of time to make sure you're happy with the decision by using Martin's "wife trick".
Martin explained: "If they say to you 'I'm sorry we will disconnect you, you say 'I just need to check that with my husband, wife or parrot."
