Martin Lewis urges Clubcard shoppers to follow 'golden rule' after Tesco issues warning

Martin Lewis is urging Tesco shoppers to follow his "golden rule" following a warning from the supermarket.

Anyone with a Tesco Clubcard has been warned by the retailer that £15 million-worth of Clubcard vouchers will expire after Wednesday, May 31 - making today the final day to spend them.

But the finance guru has shared some savings wisdom to both prolong the vouchers and also triple their value. According to Lewis, the coupons in question have a two year spending window from their first issue, meaning they can still be used after the final date.

Tesco's Clubcard scheme awards holders one point for every £1 spent and each point is worth a penny in vouchers that can be used in store or at partner outlets Speaking on Good Morning Britain last week, Lewis also explained how to triple each vouchers' value to make them go further.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, Lewis told viewers: "Go online and check, or on the app, and check whether you have any of these vouchers, it will tell you if you have any unused vouchers."

The vouchers set to expire on Wednesday were first issued in May 2021 - under the current rules you have two years to spend your Clubcard points once your voucher has been issued.

"It's worth noting that currently, you can trade in a £5 voucher for three times the value - £15 worth - on things like Pizza Express or Legoland," Martin continued. "From June 14 they're going to be double, but if you trade them in now, it's valid for a year.

"Say you've got a £10 voucher, you go online, you login, you spend say 50p of your £10, so you've now got £1.50 in restaurant vouchers - because 50p becomes £1.50. For the rest of the £9.50, they reissue it and it lasts another two years.

"So if you spend just a little bit of the voucher, the rest of it is re-issued and it lasts another two years." However, shoppers should be aware that they only have until June 14 to be able to get triple the value of their points.

After this date, Tesco is changing its rules so points are worth double when you spend with a “Rewards Partner”. Tesco currently has over 100 “Reward Partners” including Disney+, Thorpe Park, Alton Towers, Pizza Express, Legoland and Zizzi.

At the moment, 500 points are worth £5 in-store but £15 when spent with a Rewards Partner. From June 14 however, your 500 points will only be worth £10.

You won't get this if you buy something in store or online using the voucher though - it's only if you're using them on rewards. If you have several vouchers expiring on Wednesday then you will need to do this for each one of them.

Customers can use their Clubcard vouchers to bring down the cost of their weekly shop, both in-store and online, and you can also use the voucher to get money off your fuel too. If you are unsure if you have Tesco vouchers about to expire, you can view your Clubcard statement, and see how many points you have, on your Tesco Clubcard account.

You can log onto this through the Tesco website under "My Clubcard" or the Tesco Clubcard app. You can use the vouchers either on the app - or you can print them out at home if you prefer to use them in store.
