Money-saving expert Martin Lewis has issued an urgent tip to help billpayers save money on looming water bill hikes after one woman saved £400.
From April, water bills will increase from £417 a year to £448 on average, resulting in a 7.8 per cent rise. It's important to note that some households could end up paying much more as water bill rates will vary depending on your area - the steepest rise will be more than 12 per cent.
Despite this, there are ways you could save a hefty amount of cash by fitting a water meter, according to Martin. Appearing on his ITV show, a viewer revealed to Martin that she saved £400 a year on her bill after having a water meter installed as part of a two-year trial.

Debra said: "Took your advice on water bills. Last year we paid £717.00 so we opted for the two year trial to have a meter. Chuffed to bits with our first bill of £121, with an average saving of £400.
"We have since shared this with our family and friends and three have changed to water meter as well."
Martin clarified: "I presume that is a six monthly bill at £121 so it's £242 over the year, but these are substantial savings.” He added that there are "over one million free water-saving gadgets".
He continued: "It's postcode dependent some people get them some people don't. Savewatersavemoney.co.uk, which you can get totally for free from your water firm, cuts water and it cuts your energy use too, because remember much of the water that we use is heated.”
