The Budget from the Chancellor of the Exchequer makes a difference to all of our pockets, and governs everything from taxes to healthcare. So it's understandable that Martin Lewis had a special edition of his Money Show Live tonight (Thursday, March 16) to address the issues raised.
Headlines were made yesterday when the Budget revealed that free childcare for working parents in England is being expanded. The money saving guru had said on Twitter the real rollout is "quite a bit different to what some are communicating".
So what is happening? From the programme, this is what the childcare changes in the Budget look like:
England Sept 2025: 9mth to school-age children 30hrs funded childcare
- Other UK nations get funding under Barnett formula
- Full eligibility: (both) parents must earn equiv £166/wk (max £100,000/yr)
Martin also clarified what care is available for those who are eligible:
He went on to say that the Universal Credit childcare cap is to rise this summer.
- 1 child: £646 to £951/mth | 2+ children: £1,108 to £1,630/mth
- It will effectively be paid upfront for new applicants
- Won't apply to legacy benefits (tax credits). Switch to UC?
