Martin Lewis' MSE urges Asda and Lidl shoppers to act now to help slash food bill

Asda and Lidl customers are being warned they only have days left to get money-off vouchers to cut their shopping bills.

Money Saving Expert (MSE), the website founded by consumer guru Martin Lewis, has advised shoppers that the stores are offering £5 off vouchers but only for a set amount of time. According to the latest MoneySavingExpert newsletter, both retailers have offers on until February 28.

Lidl is offering one million £5 off vouchers via its app to spend by Tuesday, February 28. Meanwhile, newbies to the Asda Rewards app can get a £5 voucher to spend on almost anything in-store or online, until the same date. Here is everything you need to know about claiming and using the vouchers, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Asda 'free' £5 via rewards app

How to claim the voucher

The Money Saving Expert newsletter said that if you're a newbie to the ASDA Rewards app and you download it you can get a £5 voucher in your 'Cashpot' after completing your first online or in-store shop. The voucher can then be redeemed on your next shop.

Once you claim the voucher you then have six months to spend it. ASDA told MSE that there is no minimum spend required to get the reward, so you could buy a cheap item like a single loose banana for 14p and still get £5 in your Cashpot.

How to use the voucher

The ASDA app works a little differently to other supermarket loyalty schemes and is based on adding pounds to your Cashpot, instead of building up points. You can then convert your Cashpot balance into vouchers to spend, which you can do within the app in increments starting from £1 (the maximum single voucher amount is £100), and these can be used however you like with no minimum spend.

  • Using the voucher in-store: simply scan the voucher in the app as you go through the checkout.
  • Using the voucher online: If you want to use this voucher, or any other voucher from your Cashpot for an online spend, you must register on the Asda Rewards app using the same email address you use to sign in to Asda's online shop. Vouchers automatically apply to your online shop. If you have more than one voucher in your account, the oldest dated voucher will be used first.

When placing an order, the value of that voucher will automatically be applied to your shop, if the total cost of eligible items within your shop is greater than the value of the voucher. At this point your vouchers will be 'locked', meaning you cannot use these vouchers in store or on a second delivery. Once the order has been delivered or collected these vouchers will be taken off your shopping amount and removed from your ASDA Rewards app.

What is excluded in the voucher's use?

You can't use the voucher on kiosk items, petrol, pharmacy, third-party or ASDA gift cards and infant formula.

How to claim the voucher

Log in or register an account in the Lidl Plus app. Then press the ‘More’ tab at the bottom of the app and tap ‘Redeem code’ (this should be the top item).

Enter the code FEELGOOD and the voucher will be displayed shortly afterwards in the 'Coupons' section of the app. You must then activate the voucher in the ‘Coupons’ section of the app before scanning your Lidl Plus app at the till. You'll have to show the coupon live within the app – screenshots, pictures or printouts won't be accepted.

It can be used against almost everything in store, but does exclude alcohol, infant formula and gift cards. The qualifying spend must reach £25 after any other discounts – so if you're using Lidl Plus coupons, you'll need to factor this in. This is limited to one coupon per Lidl Plus account.

How to use the voucher

There are one million vouchers available, and you'll have until February 28 to both claim and spend the voucher, which must be done in a single transaction. Even though there are a million available, Lidl hasn't offered this voucher for over a year and think it will be very popular, so don’t hesitate to claim yours if it’s something you’re after.
