Martin Lewis makes £900 cost of living payment date prediction

Martin Lewis has predicted when the Department for Work and Pensions will pay the new £900 cost of living payment.

On Tuesday, it was announced that millions of households on low incomes would receive fresh cost-of-living support from this spring. The next round of support for households was previously unveiled in the autumn statement, building on payments made to more than eight million people in 2022.

The new £900 cash support for over eight million eligible means-tested benefits claimants, including people on Universal Credit, Pension Credit and tax credits, starts in the spring and will go directly to bank accounts in three payments, the DWP said.

According to Martin Lewis, the £900 payment will be made up of three slightly different amounts. He tweeted: "UPDATE: On the £900 cost of living payment for 8m on means-tested benefits.

"It'll come in 3 instalments - £301 'Spring' 23 (as its for the next tax year, it'll be after 6 April) - £300 'Autumn' 23 (I'd guess Oct/Nov) - £299 'Spring' 24 (I'd guess before tax year ends on 6 April)."

Explaining the reasoning behind the different amounts, he added: "PS if you're wondering why the different amounts. Its so they will be able to pin point which payment you've had and which not more easily if there are problems (which is actually quite clever)."

Exact payment windows will be announced closer to the time, the Government said, adding that payments will be spread to ensure consistent support throughout the year.
