Martin Lewis issues warning to energy customers on prepayment meters

Financial guru Martin Lewis has issued a warning to prepayment energy customers.

Those using non-smart prepayment meters have been sent vouchers for money off their energy as part of the energy bill support scheme.

However, as the scheme is set to be reviewed, Martin is urging bill payers to make sure they have used the vouchers before they expire at the end of January.

This comes following reports that some people with non-smart meters have not yet received their vouchers. for those on smart meter, credit is automatically applied to households.

The scheme was put into place to help nearly every home in the UK with electricity bills over winter amid the energy crisis. Each bill payer should have been given a discount of around £67 a month between October and March.

Speaking on This Morning on Tuesday (January 10), Martin advised households on what to do if their vouchers have not yet been applied.

He explained: "That means non-smart prepayment meters where you're topping up. There is still a good chunk of them who have not got their vouchers."

He continued: "This is getting crucial because those vouchers only last three months. You should have got them in October, so the first voucher deadline will be coming up where they are no longer valid."

While some energy providers like SSE encourage customers to get in touch with them, Martin added that his 'big advice' to everyone was to first of all check that your energy provider has the right details for you.

He said: "If not, you need to get in contact with them".

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) recently announced that it is 'monitoring effectiveness of the scheme closely, including receiving monthly data from energy suppliers.'

It said that 4,044,554 vouchers had been issued to households across Great Britain up to December 1, 2022.

The latest figures were published on GOV.UK last month.
