Martin Lewis issues urgent passport renewal warning as service 'overburdened'

Many of us are either packing our bags to jet away off on holiday or are at least thinking about it for further down the line.

And whilst it can seem exciting to finally be getting away after at least two years of staying put in the UK, it can also cause a lot of stress.

More paperwork may be required for your journey thanks to covid, however more recently there have been a lot of issues around passports, with families being warned that they need to get things organised earlier than they think.

Because of this, Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has issued a warning to holidaymakers in his latest newsletter and is asking people not to assume your passport is valid for the duration of your stay as each country has a different rule about how long you need left on your passport - as well as how old it can be.

In his newsletter he wrote: "Check if your passport will have under six months left or be over 10 years old when you go. Renewals can take months! Brexit means more countries now require UK passports to have months left on them, and be under 10 years old, to let you in. See our country-by-country rules list.

"If you need to renew, go quick, as the UK Passport Office is over-burdened and under-resourced. It says to allow 'up to 10 weeks' to get a passport, but I'm hearing it's taking even longer for some, and paying to 'fast-track' isn't an option for many as there are few appointments. To do it safely and avoid shyster lookalike sites, use our Passport renewal guide."

In the guide, linked in the newsletter, MSE add that "if you fall foul of these, you could be refused entry – we've heard one story of a family's four-year-old girl being refused entry to Turkey because she had less than two months left on her passport."

Financial guru Martin Lewis, the founder of the money savings website, has spoken out about passports before, warning people to be cautious of the time they leave between renewing their passport and their scheduled flight.

MSE added: "With standard passports taking more than 10 weeks to be processed, if you're going away in summer you need to apply now to get your passport issued or renewed in time."

Waiting times have seen some families wait 10 weeks with many paying around an extra £100 per passport to get it fast-tracked in time.

In addition to urging people to act sooner rather than later, they also released a table showing all the passport rules from popular tourists hotspots including France, Portugal and Turkey.

So what are some of the rules when it comes to passports and specific destinations?
