Martin Lewis issues important message to anyone who worked from home during Covid

Martin Lewis has issued an important message to anyone who worked from home during the pandemic.

In the latest MoneySavingExpert newsletter, founder Martin Lewis is urging anyone who worked from home between April 2020 and 6 April 2022 to claim tax relief.

Even though it is no longer mandatory to work from home, those who did - even if it was just one day - can claim for increased costs, eg, heat or electricity, for the specific time at home. In October 2020, HMRC launched a 'microservice' that allowed people who worked from home, even for just a small amount of time, to claim a whole year's worth of tax back - which means you could pocket up to £280.

According to Martin, over four million have put in a claim, but he reckons many are still missing out. HMRC have confirmed that claims from employees were eligible for tax relief if they were working at home due to coronavirus measures, if their usual workplace was closed.

The same rule also applied if you were told to self isolate by NHS Track and Trace or the NHS app and had to work from home. If this is the case, you can still apply now and it will be backdated.

In an update however, as many are now working with a hybrid system, Martin has warned that HMRC have said you are not eligible for the tax relief if you choose to work from home for this tax year (April 2022-23). You also can't claim if the only reason you are working from home is because you tested positive from coronavirus.

For this tax year, you can only claim if your employer doesn't have the facilities you need to do your job on the premises or if your job requires you to be far away from the office.

Unless you do a self- assessment tax return, you can still use the working-from-home microservice to claim if you worked from home during the pandemic. Just be sure to click 'previous tax years' when asked.
