Martin Lewis fights back tears on GMB as he recalls his mother's tragic death

Martin Lewis fought back tears on ITV's Good Morning Britain during the episode that aired on Wednesday, September 14. The founder of Money Saving Expert joined the panel alongside co-host Susanna Reid.

During the instalment, Martin became visibly emotional while opening up about his mother's tragic death when he was just a young boy. The consumer champion explained that he had lost his mum after she died in a road accident.

It comes after Martin and Susanna discussed the Queen's upcoming funeral, which will go ahead on Monday, September 19. The presenters shared their sadness at witnessing Prince William and Prince Harry go through such loss again, 25 years after the tragic death of their beloved mother, Princess Diana.

As footage from her funeral was shown, Martin became choked up and said Diana's death "resonates very powerfully" with him.

Martin said: "I mentioned this earlier, and I wasn't going to say on air, but it resonates with me very powerfully as someone who lost his mother at the same age as Harry was at the time in a road accident.

"I find it very difficult to watch. Thank goodness I wasn't forced to walk behind. I didn't even go. It does bring back some, er...."

Martin then asked Susanna to "carry on" hosting as he took a minute to gather his thoughts. "I know Martin," Susanna responded. "When events like this happen that are so public, they are very triggering of private grief, and we totally understand."

Viewers praised Martin for opening up about his childhood loss, with one writing: "Very brave of Martin Lewis to tell his story during such an emotional time."
