Martin Lewis fans thank MoneySavingExpert founder after he corrects on-air mistake

Martin Lewis appeared on ITV's This Morning today and accidentally shared some wrong information about Carer's Allowance.

The MoneySavingExpert.com founder regularly appears on the ITV daytime show to share his financial tips and today was no different to normal.

However, Martin Lewis admitted to making a "cock-up" when urging 500,000 people who are currently missing out on Carer's Allowance to make a claim.

Whilst bringing it up "on the fly" Martin Lewis told viewers that the benefit was worth £4,000 a year and £140 a week.

However, this was not correct - Carer's Allowance currently pays a rate of £76.75 per week.

Martin Lewis had accidentally shared the maximum amount of money you can make whilst claiming the benefit rather than the weekly pay rate.

Following the mistake, Martin issued a correction on his social media and apologised.

In his tweet, the Money Saving Expert shared that he had "verbally transposed it with the max you can earn to get it".

He said: "I COCKED UP SORRY. When bringing up carers allowance on the fly just now urging the 500,000 carers missing out to check if they're due it.

"I said it was worth £4,000 a year, but then mistakenly £140 a week (I verbally transposed it with the max you can earn to get it, £140/wk). Carers allowance is £77/wk"

Martin then went on to say the benefit "should be" £140 a week but isn't.

He added: "Still the big message is if you're a carer and care over 35hours a week check if you're due it.

"If not, check if you're due carers national insurance credits which can boost your state pension."

He also told his followers if he could see if the This Morning programme could do an "on air correction".

Fans of the Money Saving Expert have since flooded Martin's twitter comments with praise for his apology and correction.

On Twitter user, @Spursy15 said: "Martin, everyone makes mistakes, but not many people openly own that they have. You’ve helped my family so much. Rock on, buddy"

Another user, @Louise_Ch_ said: "Bless you for being so human and honest we all make mistakes especially with on the spot maths."

User @stephderm added: "How utterly refreshing. You're doing God's work Martin. Go well."

One user @User_Lowton noted how "easy" it was for the Money Saving Expert to correct a "genuine error".

They added: "Not only could our Chancellor learn from Martin Lewis but so could our Home Secretary!"
