Martin Lewis fan wins £3,500 bank payout after reading advice

A fan of Martin Lewis ' website MoneySavingExpert has thanked experts on the site for their advice after claiming back a huge amount of money from the bank on behalf of her mum.

The reader explained that her elderly mother had been mis-sold a packaged bank account, a type of premium account that offers additional services such as travel insurance and breakdown cover for a monthly fee. The amount of money you can claim depends on how long you have had the account for - meaning that the payment could run into the thousands as in this case, The Mirror reports .

The MoneySavingExpert user wrote: "I have Power of Attorney for my 93-year-old mum who has Alzheimer's. I discovered all she had used this account with a monthly fee for was to make one monthly payment to a charity.

"I got my mum £3,456.23 back," she went on. "I wouldn't have complained if I hadn't been made aware by your programme. Thank you."

Customers may be entitled to money back if they have been sold a packaged bank account without being properly informed about what they were getting and paying for. For example, some people could get a payout if they didn’t realise they were paying a fee or were unable to use the insurance that came as part of the package.

According to MoneySavingExpert , you may be owed money if one or more of the following applies:

  • You were wrongly told you had to get it

  • You couldn’t use the insurance

  • You were misled into taking out the account

  • The fee was added without you knowing

  • You tried to cancel but were forced to keep it

  • You were told it was the only way to get an overdraft

  • No one mentioned you needed to register your phone/car

  • You were told having one would improve your credit score

Those who were mis-sold their account should get back all fees they paid for it, plus interest. To claim, you can get in touch with the bank that you had the account with to explain why you believe you were mis-sold - if the bank rejects your claim or doesn’t respond within eight weeks, you can escalate your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman for free.
