Martin Lewis fan saves £926 on holiday after following clever travel tip

A fan of consumer guru Martin Lewis saved £926 on his summer holiday thanks to his advice.

The man, known as Paul, wrote to the Money Saving Expert team to share his story. He told MSE that he followed Martin's "cancel and rebook" tip for his holiday car hire.

If you have free cancellation for a holiday purchase - such as a hotel booking or car hire - you should continue to check your booking on price comparison websites to see if it becomes cheaper. If it does, and you have free cancellation, then you can cancel and rebook it for a cheaper price.

Paul explained to the MSE team that he had booked a car hire for his three-week summer holiday in January of this year. However, he found that the price for his exact deal had "dropped dramatically" a little while later, reports The Mirror.

This was when Paul remembered what he had heard on the ITV Martin Lewis Money show. Paul had free cancellation on his hire plan so cancelled it and rebooked it there and then.

This helped him shave off the car hire price by around £742. A few weeks later, Paul discovered the price of his care hire had dropped again - so cancelled and rebooked again which helped him save a further £184.

Overall, following the "cancel and rebook" tip, Paul managed to save £926 on his holiday car hire. Paul said: "On Martin's ITV show, someone messaged about saving on car hire by cancelling then rebooking - we did similar.

"In January, we booked for our three-week summer holiday, then discovered the price had dropped dramatically. We had free cancellation, so we did that then rebooked, saving £742. A couple of weeks later the price dropped further, so we did it again, saving a further £184, a total saving of £926."

The MSE website says it is "well worth " looking for a flexible policy when booking car hire as firstly it will cover you if you have to change or cancel your plans. The team does urge people to double check the terms and conditions of the plan before going down this route - just to make sure free cancellation is included.

This is because some sites can add in some "sneaky fees" such as admin or reimbursement charges - some of these can potentially top £30. It does also note that sites which offer free cancellation are "by no means the cheapest" - this means you will likely be paying more for a flexible booking.
