A Martin Lewis fan has explained how she slashed £110 off her energy bills after making one small change.
Appearing on Tuesday’s episode of The Money Show Live, Martin revisited some success stories from fans who managed to make big savings after taking his advice.
This was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ITV consumer rights programme.
It began with a tip from a viewer named Sandy who took Martin's advice on how to reduce the amount spent on heating.
Sandy said: "Watching Martin Lewis. I checked my boiler flow temp. It was at 82 degrees. I've turned it down to 60. I should save £110 a year. Check your combi boiler now."
Martin said the check was an "easy way" to save money for those who use a combi boiler.
He said: "Go to moneysavingboilerchallenge.com, nothing to do with me, and it will show you whether your boiler is set too high and you can bring it down. You can save money that way."
The website says turning down your combi could save a typical household hundreds.
It said: “Many combi boilers are burning more gas, generating more carbon emissions and costing households more than they need to.
“People could be saving energy and money simply by ensuring their boiler is running as efficiently as possible. But many people aren’t aware they can change their boiler settings.
According to The Money Saving Boiler challenge, the average household could save £112 on their heating simply by lowering their boiler flow temperature.
It adds: "Heating homes with fossil fuels accounts for 15% of the UK’s carbon emissions.
“So by using energy more efficiently, we can cut carbon emissions and save money on our heating bills at the same time."
In the UK, more than 15 million households use a combi boiler.
The website claims that spreading the word on this simple hack can save 1.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions.
It said: “If 10 million households turned down the flow temperature on their combi boilers to 60°c or below this could wipe £1billion off UK energy bills and save 1.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions – the equivalent of nearly six million transatlantic flights.”
The Money Saving Boiler Challenge is based on extensive research by Nesta, the UK’s innovation agency for social good.
Findings suggest that a typical household could save about 9% on its total gas use by making this change - assuming that boiler flow temperatures are currently set at 80°C.
For an average household with a yearly gas consumption of 12,000 kWh, reducing the flow to 60°C would save 1,092 kWh of gas per year.
At current prices, this equates to a saving of £112 per year.
The website includes a step-by-step guide on how to turn down your boiler for those looking to make big savings this winter.
