Martin King's wife Jenny McCarthy reveals one early sign that indicated her brain tumour had returned

Photographer Jenny McCarthy has told how a stabbing pain in her ear had indicated her brain tumour had returned.

Jenny, who is the wife of broadcaster Martin King, suffered a devastating blow when she was told by doctors earlier this year that they had discovered another brain tumour - 11 years after she had her first brain tumour removed.

She underwent successful surgery earlier this year and was told by top docs she didn’t need any further treatment.

But Jenny revealed the first signs that she knew she was unwell again last November.

Jenny said: “I knew there was something not right. The only year I didn’t go for a check-up was in 2020. And then in 2021, I started having this stabbing pain behind my ear. It would only last a couple of seconds and then it would go again, but it was so severe that it was making me feel sick. Sure enough, I had the scan, and it was back.”

But after a tough few weeks of recovery, Jenny told of her relief when doctors told her she didn’t need any further treatment.

“That was very emotional. I felt that my whole life was on pause because I didn’t know what was going to happen. I just felt like I couldn’t move on until I got that news. It was amazing,” she added.

But she admitted she sometimes wonders if her tumour will return.

She said: “There are days when I think about what happens if it comes back again and I just have to say to myself, ‘It’s gone, it’s gone, it’s gone’ and say thank you for this second chance.

“We didn’t live from scan to scan the last time either, so we are going to try our best not to do that now,” she told the Rte Guide.

But Virgin Media’s Six O’Clock presenter Martin opened up about how brave Jenny decided to take herself to the hospital on her own for her brain surgery.

He said: “The day came for Jenny to go to the hospital, for the surgery, the next day, and they wanted her to go in for a scan first.

“So I expected her to go do the scan, come back to the house, and I’d drop her in that evening but Jenny had other plans.”

Jenny said: “I knew I couldn’t do that goodbye at the door. I just couldn’t.”

Martin said: “So I packed Jenny’s bag for her and she said, ‘I am going to go over. I am going to do these scans and I’ll be back.’

“So I said, ‘Okay’ and off she went. I watched her drive away and then I went up the stairs and the suitcase was gone and I just thought, ‘She is not coming back. She is after pulling the wool over my eyes.’”

Jenny added: “I had stepped outside of myself. I completely did. None of my friends could understand it. They were all bawling whereas I was just like ‘Stop that’ I am going to be fine.

“I actually avoided everyone because I couldn’t deal with it. I was focusing on the end game… getting back to my family and back to work,” she added.
