Martin Keown in fuming Rangers and Celtic rant as shock jock declares 'of course it's an Old Firm game'

Footballer turned shock jock Martin Keown has gone after Rangers and Celtic in the wake of the Sydney Super Cup fallout.

The friendly between the rivals has collapsed following a fuming fan reaction, with the Ibrox pulling the plug on the Oz showdown.

Former Arsenal skipper Keown wasn't happy to see the game in Australia be abandoned claiming it showed a bigger issue across the Glasgow divide.

Speaking on comparisons to Manchester United and Liverpool's planned friendly clash in Bangkok with the Old Firm friendly, Keown told talkSPORT: "The reasons those two teams are doing that (Liverpool and Manchester United) is because those two teams respect one another.

"There isn't the underlying bitterness and animosity that there is between these two Glasgow greats. When these two clubs come together and actually start building fans forums and discussion groups together, then you can think about games on the other side of the world."

After former Rangers boss weighed in on the derby clash ahead at his Aston Villa press conference, Keown added: "Stevie (Gerrard) is acknowledging it's an Old Firm game; of course it's an Old Firm game that they are playing. It's another game that the Celtic fans are playing to wind the Rangers fans up."

He would loop back to the Sydney Super Cup clash, continuing: "As an initiative the money, the proceeds could have went to the Ukraine. There are so many proceeds it could have gone towards.

"It is narrow minded from the Rangers fans, but at the moment they are being wound up.

“It’s an amazing fixture but it’s localised because people aren’t putting bitterness to one side.”
