Martin Freeman has finally let fans in on a sweet slice of his personal life, and it’s left many feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Best known for his roles in Sherlock and The Hobbit, Martin gave a rare insight into his romance with French actress Rachel Benaissa—and it’s every bit as charming as you’d hope.
Speaking on the Table Manners podcast hosted by Jessie Ware and her mum Lennie, Martin didn’t hold back on how much he enjoys everyday moments with his girlfriend. When asked about Rachel, who’s French, and whether she had any formal culinary skills, Martin laughed and set the record straight.
“She’s not a Cordon Bleu… She’s a massive cheese and wine w,” he said casually. “That’s what she would say about herself. She says that about herself, ‘I’m a cheese and wine w.’ It’s not all she is, but no, she loves all that stuff. We like cooking.”
The couple spends plenty of time in the kitchen, just cooking, chatting, and enjoying being together. No big declarations, no dramatic stories—just a couple genuinely enjoying the simple things in life.
Martin, who shares two kids with ex-partner and Sherlock co-star Amanda Abbington, also reflected on how his upbringing shaped his views on relationships and roles at home. While his dad, Geoffrey, came from a traditional, working-class background where women were expected to cook, Martin revealed that his mum didn’t buy into that way of thinking at all.
“She would just ask, ‘Why should I?’” he said, describing her strong personality and no-nonsense approach. He also explained that being one of 14 children meant that some traditional skills and expectations didn’t always get passed down the line.
“My mum was one of 14. I think certain bits of knowledge got kind of skipped over various bits of that brood of kids,” he shared.
Martin’s approach to love and family has been shaped by a mix of old-school values and modern perspectives. He seems genuinely at ease with his partner, finding joy in everyday routines and shared laughs over wine and cheese.
While Martin has always kept his private life under wraps, this rare chat about Rachel gave fans a glimpse into a relationship that’s built on connection, humour, and mutual respect. And honestly, it just made people love him more.
