Martin Compston shares gripping trailer for new Scottish drama The Rig

Scottish actor Martin Compston has unveiled the release date for his gripping new drama The Rig along with an exciting trailer.

The Line of Duty star, 37, has been busy since he hung up with AC12 waistcoats and will be starring in a new drama that will be released in January on Amazon Prime alongside Iain Glen, Emily Hampshire and Guilt's Mark Bonnar.

Martin has been teasing fans of the new show over the last 12 months, after he was spotted staying in Edinburgh while filming The Rig. Taking to Instagram and Twitter, Martin wrote: “What is going on out there?” The Rig coming to @primevideouk on Jan 6th 2023."

The supernatural drama is set on the Kishorn Bravo oil rig, just off the coast of Scotland where the crew are left isolated from the mainland after a mysterious fog envelops them. Tensions rise between the crew as they are "driven to the limits of both their loyalties and their endurance, into a confrontation with forces beyond their imagination."

Fans quickly replied to the star, expressing their excitement. One fan replied: "So so can’t wait and thank you for releasing on my granddaughters birthday!!! Triple celebrations all round."

Another said: "I can't wait for this. Hope your character lasts a lot longer this time," referring to his short-lived role in BBC's Vigil.

"This looks amazing! Can't wait to check it out," a third commented.

And another added: "Oooo looks spooky- can’t wait."

This comes after Compston announced that his other show, Mayflies, is part of the BBC's festive schedule. The series is based on Scottish author Andrew O'Hagan's book of the same name, which won Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year 2021. It has been described as an “intimate and devastating portrait of male friendship”.

In a statement to the BBC, O’Hagan said of the TV adaptation: “The story is a very personal one to me, and it’s amazing to see the characters come to life.”

Martin will star alongside Tony Curran, who plays best friend Tully Dawson. Set in a small Scottish town, Mayflies tells the story of the two young men, who form a friendship based on music, films, and, a rebel spirit.

With school over and the locked world of their fathers before them, they rush towards the climax of their youth - a magical weekend in Manchester, the epicentre of everything that inspires them in working-class Britain.

There, against the greatest soundtrack ever recorded, a vow is made: to go at life differently. Thirty years on, half a life away, the phone rings. Tully has the worst kind of news, and a request that will test their friendship, love, and loyalty to the limit.

As the synopsis concludes: “Mayflies is a memorial to youth’s euphoria and to everyday tragedy. A tender goodbye to an old union, it discovers the joy and the costs of love.”
