Martin Compston series The Rig given green light for second series

POPULAR Amazon Prime show The Rig starring Martin Compston has been given the green light for a second series.

The show, about a group of workers on a remote oil rig in the North Sea, has enjoyed global success having topped TV streaming charts at one point.

Compston will return for the second season as will fellow Scottish actor Iain Glen and will again be released on Prime Video.

An official announcement on series two read: “Helicopters have taken the surviving crew of the Kinloch Bravo to a bold new location, where new dangers await them.

“The crew will have to deal with the emotional and physical fallout of the epic series one finale and contend with swirling conspiracies, conflicts, and new threats from the dark depths of the world’s oceans it has unleashed.

“Series two will continue exploring global themes about the past, present, and future of the planet, all while delivering epic thrills and gripping action for its compelling cast of characters.”

The first series was filmed in the FirstStage Studios complex in Leith and it will return there for its second outing while the show will also reunite Edinburgh-based writer David Macpherson with director John Strickland.

The Rig was the first major TV series to be filmed at the studios in Edinburgh which was previously used for Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War.

The National previously spoke with the cast and crew of the film who spoke of the physical toll the series took on them.

Head of Originals UK & Northern Europe at Prime Video Dan Grabiner said: “The Rig’s popularity around the world is a testament to the fantastic ensemble cast and the vision of the creators – the crew behind the crew.

“We can’t wait to see what writer and creator David Macpherson has in store for the Kinloch Bravo team next.”
