Martha Stewart's genius hack for keeping a cutting board in place is going into our kitchen manual – it will ease your food prep woes

Martha Stewart.

There is nothing worse than a cutting board that slides around the counter, but for many of us, it has becoming a nusiance we have learned to deal with. Enter Martha Stewart with some expert advice, and now we have a game-changing solution: terry cloth towels.

The Martha Moments Instagram account, which is a treasure trove of domestic tips and tricks, recently shared an old clip of Martha explaining her hack for keeping cutting boards and baking trays steady on a counter or table, and the solution is incredibly simple and effective. It's our new kitchen essential.

'Here's a little secret that I learned while I was catering: if you have a board on a countertop, oftentimes the board will slide,' she explains in the clip. 'You'll have a lot of difficulty rolling out pastry if the board is moving around on your counter. Same thing with a pan like this, if you're carrying a fragile cake in the back of your car, it might just slide around. A simple solution: a wet cloth inserted underneath the tray or the pan. Just fold a terry cloth dish cloth, pull your board right on top of it, and try as you might, you're not going to budge that board.'

Terry cloth is highly absorbent, so placing a towel underneath a cutting block will also simultaneously dry any spills. Whether you prefer wood or plastic cutting blocks, this tip is fantastic for making chopping and preparing foods easier.
