Marseille president sends 'important' message over Leeds United-linked striker

Ligue 1 club Marseille's president Pablo Longoria has said he's prepared to offer a new contract to striker Bamba Dieng, even though the 22-year-old was almost a Leeds United player in the summer.

In fact, Dieng almost signed for two different clubs in the transfer window - the first was the Whites before suddenly having a change of heart on deadline day and deciding to sign with OGC Nice.

However, a failed medical with Nice meant he had to sheepishly return to Marseille where he was dropped from the squad for the first eight games of their Ligue 1 campaign.

Even in recent weeks, Dieng hasn't had a big role to play, having made just one start this season for seven appearances but hasn't made much of an impact.

When asked about what role Dieng will play for his club in the future, Longoria was quick to admit that they were prepared to offer him a new deal.

"We want to discuss a contract extension in the next few weeks. We believe he will be an important player in Marseille’s future."

No contract talks will take place in the immediate future though as despite his limited minute at the club level, Dieng was selected for the Senegal World Cup squad alongside the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and Sadio Mane.
