Married At First Sight UK viewers were left heartbroken after Thomas and Adrian announced they would be leaving the show in a shock exit. During last night's (Oct 11) episode of the popular Channel 4 experiment, Thomas decided to end his marriage to husband Adrian and subsequently quit the programme.
Thomas broke down in tears as the couple attended a dinner party with their fellow participants, admitting that he found it 'tough' to see all the other couples being in love. It comes after the pair had a number of turbulent weeks, including a troublesome homestay that left the Liverpudlian initially choosing to leave the show there and then in the previous commitment ceremony last week, as reported by the Mirror.
Speaking to the whole group at the dinner party, an emotional Thomas said: "I'm looking round the table and seeing how happy everyone is and I just don't feel like that. We're not in love and it sucks really."
As Thomas and Adrian went outside to talk to each other privately, Thomas told his partner: "You mean the world to me - just because we love each other doesn't mean we are supposed to be together."
Adrian replied: "Whenever you've felt vulnerable, I needed you to know that someone was there. I wanted you to know that someone would stick through and that someone would care and protect you."
"Don't you think I feel all of them things?" Thomas asked, visibly upset. "What I have taken away from this is someone that is so important and that is you. You are my rock."
In the wake of their conversation outside, Thomas and Adrian then decided to break the news to the other couples. "I would like to make a bit of an announcement that me and Thomas have had a chat and after making a phenomenal journey and coming from hell on earth with this chap and coming to the most amazing place where I actually adore this man and everything about him, we have decided that we will not be making it to final vows, and we will be bowing out gracefully," Adrian said.
Thomas added: "And with the most beautiful man that I would never have asked for anything more in this experience. We're going to be best friends forever but not husbands forever."
Hundreds of viewers took to Twitter after the show to declare their sadness at the split.
@Luciella27397 tweeted: "Thomas and Adrian got me tearing up man #mafsuk."
@Care_jeffs tweeted: "What an authentically beautiful, respectful and honest breakup of Adrian and Thomas. Sat blubbing watching it. Two good & genuine people who I wish nothing but the best for #MAFS #MAFSUK."
@Afradlons commented: "Adrian breaking down in tears got me. I respect him & Thomas for having a difficult chat and being honest with each other. It was tough but seeing them go separate ways to respect each other’s needs was touching. Their souls were meant to cross and their bond is beautiful."
@AmyJoSays added: "Oh Thomas and Adrian. There is so much love there - it's just not romantic. I hope they stay friends."
@Liammcr_ wrote: "Adrian and Thomas I’m glad they were mature about it and worked out that it just didn’t work, but I was rooting for them so much #MAFSUK," with two crying emojis.
