Married At First Sight matchmaker hit with ‘thousands’ of threats from viewers after recent episode

Married At First Sight UK matchmaker Paul Carrick Brunson has revealed the ugly side of the show’s fanbase as he admitted that he had been subjected to “thousands” of nasty messages following Thursday’s episode.

Some viewers were left displeased by the events that unfolded on the recent episode of the Channel 4 series concerning contestants Matt Murray and Whitney Hughes. The pair shook things up after revealing that they had feelings for one another - despite being married to other people in the experiment.

Following an explosive dinner party scene where the truth was revealed, Matt and Whitney had opted to leave the show with their initial partners Gemma and Duka, but had expressed hope that they would be allowed to re-join as a couple. And the MAFS experts found themselves on the receiving end of a backlash as many viewers took issue with the decision to ultimately allow Matt and Whitney back on the show, The Mirror reports .

Paul was seen discussing the pair’s future in the experiment alongside therapist Charlene Douglas and psychologist Mel Schilling. Mel was seen telling the couple: “We have reviewed the science and you are a strong match on paper.

“But the way you went about this we're not happy with, we're really disappointed in the way that happened,” she added. “But we can see there is something real here, the science backs it up, and we are willing to allow you back into the experiment as a new couple – not as a married couple but as a dating couple.”

Taking to his Instagram Stories, Paul shared one of the messages he had received in response to the scenes which read: “Really disappointed in you and the show for letting a cheating couple back into the process. Shall stop watching the show now.”

Paul explained: “I've received what could be thousands of these messages. There is no way for me to reply individually to all, so I'll do it publicly: Whenever a major decision is made on any TV show, it is made with input from many people (who are on and off camera).

“The decision to bring Matt & Whitney back was hotly debated and not unanimous. However, as experts and production, we are collectively a team, and if the majority wants to move in a direction, we all move.

“That's what a team does,” he added. “If this decision has caused you to lose your desire to continue watching the series, I respect your decision.”

The expert continued in a separate post: “In full transparency... I've worked in TV for 12 years, and in one night have received more hate and threats than I've received in my entire career. I'm good, though.”

The MAFS star added that he was “sipping a glass of wine with [his wife] Jill talking about it all”, and ended his Instagram post: “This single night has shown me, like no other, the influence of TV and the truthfulness of this quote: 'Always remember that the crowd that applauds your coronation is the same crowd that will applaud your beheading.'”
