Married at First Sight Australia: fans left horrified after groom admits he's still in love with ex

Married at First Sight fans were left stunned on Wednesday night's episode which saw the newlyweds move into their apartments together and participate in confessions week.

And despite some bombshell confessions between Duncan and Alyssa which put one of the more stronger couples already on the rocks after confessing she once had a marital affair, it was groom Shannon who left viewers stunned at his bizarre behaviour.

The couples had been tasked with a 'Tinder-style' ranking challenge to put the grooms and brides in order of who they find most to least attractive at face value.

The personal trainer became under fire instantly as he ranked his new bride Caitlin in the top three after picking Melinda for the top spot on attraction before moving her further down after saying he would be "lying to himself" if he ranked his bride any higher.

"I usually approach girls like her [Melinda] and get told no, but who wouldn't be proud to show someone like that off to their mates," said Shannon as he repeatedly dug himself a hole by trying to say he hadn't seen the other brides without make-up yet as he has with Caitlin.

But their night went from bad to worse as Caitlin noticed her groom return to their apartment emotional following a bombshell statement he had been on the phone to his ex-partner who he had been in an on and off relationship with for seven years.

Shannon, who shares a daughter with his ex, had been engaged to his former love interest before coming on the show and in a shock admission to viewers said he "wasn't over" her and entered the show to try and "break the toxic cycle" of going back there.

"I don't know where I am at, I have so many emotions going on in my head and I can't help what my heart speaks," said Shannon.

“I can’t do it, I have so much respect for you, you’re an absolute saint and feel I am leading two people on” as Caitlin says she is well aware of the situation now and the 30-year-old walks away.

Fans were left feeling heartfelt sorry for the new bride as she spoke off-camera putting on a brave face and smiling through the pain, as she asked producers "can I cry now?" as she broke down into tears.

“I don’t know where that leaves me," Caitlin said.

“I was just hoping this time I could find someone that could love me but no I am not surprised, it’s s***.” as she smiles again

We saw in a previous episode a clip of Shannon telling the experts he was on the show as he "wants that full commitment" with someone, but fans have blasted the groom for being hypocritical and dishonest with his new wife.

One person wrote: "Poor Caitlin, she so deserves so much better than Shannon who still obviously hasn't learned that being honest doesn't mean you have to be a total dick! And still in love with his ex, he shouldn't even be on the show. #MAFSAU #MarriedatfirstsightAustralia"

Another wrote: "that was heartbreaking to watch I was blubbering with her! The fact that she expected this and feels like no one can love her is heart wrenching she is beautiful inside & out she was even so understanding & supportive with Shannon after his blow #MAFSAU"

A third penned: "Just catching up on tonight’s episode. Is Shannon in this experiment just to make his ex jealous and win her back?? What a waste of dear Caitlin’s time. #MAFSAustralia #MAFSAU #MAFSAUS"
