Marquette coach Shaka Smart has confirmed that star guard Tyler Kolek is making significant progress in his recovery from an oblique injury. Kolek, the 2023 Big East player of the year, has been actively participating in 5-on-5 drills this week, indicating a positive step towards his return.
Kolek has been sidelined for Marquette's last six games due to the injury but is expected to make a comeback for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Marquette, holding the No. 2 seed in the South Region with a record of 25-9, is set to face Western Kentucky (22-11) on Friday in Indianapolis.
Smart expressed his optimism about Kolek's return, stating that the guard has been fully engaged in practice sessions, including full-court drills. With impressive stats of 7.6 assists per game, 15 points, and 4.7 rebounds, Kolek's presence is crucial for Marquette's success.
The injury occurred during a game against Providence on Feb. 28, leading Kolek to miss several crucial matchups. Despite the team going 3-3 in his absence, the impact of his return is eagerly anticipated, especially after facing losses against top-seeded UConn.
Smart acknowledged that Kolek might need some time to readjust after being out for three weeks but expressed satisfaction with the guard's performance in recent practices. He noted that Kolek appeared to be back in form and ready to contribute to the team's efforts.
Kolek's health had been a concern during last year's NCAA Tournament when he sustained a thumb injury. Although he continued to play, his performance was affected in a subsequent loss to Michigan State.
