Marmite dethroned by Aldi and Morrisons as best spread in blind taste test

It may be one of the most divisive foods in British history, but it looks like everyone can agree on one thing when it comes to the distinct spread that is Marmite.

While the unique spread may have earned a legion of fans in its history - it even has its own range of festive baubles - it looks like another cheaper version has dethroned the branded version as the best.

Whether you love it or hate it, leading consumer champion Which? tested a range of supermarket spreads against the iconic brand and one was more impressive than the others - Aldi.

The taste test included 60 consumers who compared a range of the funky dark spread against each other and found that Aldi and Morrisons versions were better than the real thing.

The tasters were asked to rate the taste, texture, aroma and appearance of each one and they found that the two supermarket's were on par with each other for the crown.

Aldi has been holding their own against branded versions for a while now and the results comes just after the budget supermarket beat out M&S for the best dine in for two meal deal for this Valentine's Day.

Fans of the divisive spread will be happy to hear that the supermarket's version is 30 per cent cheaper than Marmite at just £1.69.

It will come as welcome news following the cost of living crisis that has left consumers across the country grappling with higher prices.

Aldi’s Grandessa Mighty Yeast Extract (£1.69, 240g) came out top, scoring 75%, joint first with Morrisons Yeast Extract, which costs 31p more (£2.00, 240g).

Morrisons also came joint first place in the blind taste test (Which?)

In contrast, Marmite scored just 65%.

Which? said of Aldi’s and Morrisons winning spreads: “Both got high marks across the board. But it was their flavour that set them apart from the rest, leading them to scoop Best Buys.

"Our panel rated them as superior when it came to taste, with a good strength of flavour that wasn’t too salty and an easy-to-spread texture.”

In fact, fans of the spread may have to consider switching to a supermarket's own-branded version of the spread, as the real deal came in fourth place.

Both Asda and Tesco also managed to beat the branded version by ranking second and third place behind Aldi and Morrisons.

Asda Yeast Extract (£1.79, 240g) was the runner-up by scoring 72%, while Tesco's Yeast Extract (£1.98, 225g) came close in third place with a score of 70%.
